As the editors of the Christian Professional Phone Directory, we believe that this year’s theme Business Basics is more important now than ever. As business owners, it is so easy to forget that our number one product is service to our customers, as well as keeping our own businesses financially sound. Contained within this year’s directory are some ways that successful local business people have discovered how to keep their businesses on track.

As we see the economy being turned upside down with the failure of the fifth largest bank in America, Bear Stearns, it is obvious that business basics went array. For example, spend less than you earn and make sure that you do not get over extended by easy credit. A close examination will reveal that Bear Stearns’ risky investments turned out to be their demise, as well as major loss for not only their shareholders, but America’s financial institutions as a whole.

Another negative reflection of our economy is the current housing crisis. Foreclosures are off the charts and good hard working folks are losing their homes. However, some of the homes being foreclosed on were not only purchased with the idea that no matter what they bought prices will always go up, put as little money down as possible, and buy as much house as they can get. In reality most people should have purchased homes that they could afford, versus what the bank said they qualify for.

Principles for business should be reflected in our lives, our families and our attitude towards customers, clients and associates. Business Basics are time proven and no amount of new technology or fuzzy accounting will change proven biblical principles.
